Description about custom agentless policy

This custom "Agentless Monitor pack" contains agentless "WMI" metrics which are monitoring agentless computers performance and Altiris Services performance as well.

image2015-4-8 22-3-2.png

You can download this attached "ITMS 7.6 Agentless performance counters monitor packs.xml" and import it on your server where SMP and Monitor Solution 7.6 is installed.

Note!:

  • These monitor policies were created, using 7.6 release but it should work in 7.5 SP1 as well.

How to import custom monitor policies .xml file:

1. Download attached .xml file

2. Open SMP Console and go to "Monitoring and Alerting" main page ⇒ open "Import Monitor Pack" page ⇒ click "Add" ⇒ "Browse" and choose downloaded .xml ⇒ click "OK".

ImportMOnitorPack.jpg

3. Chosen .xml agentless policy will appears in list of other monitor packs ⇒ click on this custom agentless pack and click "Schedule"⇒ click "Now"

ImportMonitorPack_2.jpg

After this you will have available new folder with all these agentless monitor policies.

Other details about this agentless monitor policy:

1. Each agentless metric has poll interval after each 5 minutes. (You can always increase or decrease this 5 minutes poll interval of metric from "Metric Library")

2. Most part of these all metric rules are "Metric Collect" rules, which means that they will only collect metric data but not trigger the Rule condition and raise alert in Event Console. (You can always create separate "Metric Rule" and use existing metrics to set required Rule condition for further rule triggering and alert raising in Event Console)

3. There are some metric rules created and if they will be triggered, then you will have raised alert in Event Console from monitored resource and also will receive an email notification.

MetricRule_SendEmail.jpg

4. To receive emails with content about triggered Rule from appropriate monitored resource, you need to make sure that you have correct SMTP settings in "Notification Server" settings

SMTP_NS_Settings.jpg

And also make sure that you have set correct email address (or mail address group) in this "Send email" task (Then after Rule triggering, all required people will receive information about this alert and alert's content)

How to discover computer from network and use this discovered agentless computer to be monitored by "Agentless Monitor Policy"

1. Open SMP Console ⇒ "Home"⇒ "Discovery and Inventory"⇒ "Network Discovery"

2. Click "New"⇒ will appears "Create Discovery Task" window where you will see "Connection Profile" drop down menu and by default it uses "Default Connection Profile".

DefaultConnectionProfile_1.jpg

Note: If you will use "Default Connection Profile" for Network Discovery task, then all discovered computers will be monitored by "RMS" plug-in using only "Default Connection Profile".

Example:

PC_1 is discovered by 1st "Network Discovery" task, using "Default Connection Profile"

"RMS" plug-in monitors using "Default Connection Profile" for this agentless "PC_1", because PC_1 was discovered using this profile.

PC_2 is discovered by  2nd "Network Discovery" task, using 2nd new custom "Connection Profile"

"RMS" plug-in monitors using "2nd New Connection Profile" for this agentless "PC_2", because PC_2 was discovered using 2nd profile.

Pay attention on that you're using correct credentials for WMI, SNMP, HTTP protocols in "Connection Profile" because during agentless monitoring, some metrics can be turned to unavailable for appropriate discovered computer, due invalid credentials, etc.

You can always change credentials for appropriate protocol in Connection Profile and then on next policy refresh or "RMS" plug-in restart it will use updated new credentials.

DefaultConnectionProfile_Credentials.jpg

3. When you have discovered computers via "Network Discovery" task, then you can open your "Agentless Monitor" policy and create required "Resource Target" to include there these computers for further agentless monitoring.

Note: Of course you can add in "Resource Target" your managed endpoints as well (servers with installed SMA) and monitor them as well.

MonitoredTarget.jpg

After save changes, next policy refresh will receive this monitor policy on "RMS" plug-in installed server and agentless monitoring will be started.

Thanks,

IP.

How to create your custom menu button with all required web parts in one place

"How to create custom SMP Console menu where will be all required web parts in one place"

1. There is a list of available "Web Parts" in SMP Console, where you can set appropriate settings for each web part and take URL of appropriate Web part to create own custom menu.

WebParts_List.jpg

Here is a list of all available web parts in ITMS 7.5.x

WebParts_List2.jpg

For example I've opened a "Task Computers and Devices" web part where I can take URL for further creation of custom menu.

TS Web Part.jpg

2. In SMP Console, you can create own custom menu button and other menu items.

Custom_Menus.jpg

Custom_Menus_2.jpg

Here you can create own new custom menu button for SMP Console. For example I'll create a new main menu button and set name "TS Web" where will be menu item to have appropriate web parts there, such as "Task Server Details".

TS_web_Create_1.jpg

When you've set name of this menu button, then click "Save Changes" then this custom menu button will appear in SMP Console.

TS_web_Menu.jpg

Now I'll set appropriate name "Task Servers and clients details" and will choose to "Show" a "Single page view" -> set as URL and paste there copied URL from "Task Computers and Devices" web part (/Altiris/TaskManagement/TaskServerDetails.aspx) and Save changes.

TaskServers_SubMenu.jpg

Finally I have custom new main menu button with sub-menu where I can open directly "Task Servers and registered clients state details" directly.

TSweb_withSubmenu.jpg

After opening it, I can see list of all available Task Servers and all managed registered clients state.

Listof Task Servers and devices.jpg

3. You can go back to "Settings" -> "Console" -> "Menus" -> click on your new Menu "TS Web" -> click "New" -> "Menu Item" -> set appropriate settings there and get required Web Part URL (mentioned above here) -> Save changes.

Continuing our commitment to help users get the most value out of the Endpoint Management solutions, our product teams are now sponsoring twelve groups on Connect. In these groups, you will find the best how to videos, articles, and product extensions available.

Sponsored groups are monitored by the people responsible for those solutions. The product teams will enhance your product experience by doing the following things:

  • Create content based on your needs and requests
  • Answer forum posts and comments
  • Highlight employee and user created content from Connect to make it easier to find
  • Search for content relating to their group and tag it so that you only have to go one place to find all content relating to your interests
  • Keep track of customer-posted ideas and make suggestions for product enhancements

Why should I join and contribute to sponsored groups?

By participating in these groups you will gain access to best practices that have been reviewed by subject matter experts. You will also find access to insightful advice from other users and a trusted conduit for submitting ideas for new content and improvements to our product teams.

By joining and contributing to these groups you add value to our solutions and help us continue to make them better.

For a basic overview of each group, see the following article:
Which Group Should I Join?

How to join and contribute to groups

To join a sponsored group, navigate to the Groups page in the Endpoint Management or Endpoint Virtualization communities.

I've tried posting this elswhere, and feel it's received no attention. Hopefully this is an appropriate place to post.

In Altiris 6.9, we had the ability to tell when a machine was currently online.  Losing this ability in 7.X has really hampered our ability to troubleshoot issue, both internally and with Symantec Tech support reps.  Please bring this feature back!

I need a solution

Failed to get Symantec Management Agent registration status, could not contact the service 'Altiris Object Host Service'. Please make sure that service is started and functional.
There was no endpoint listening at net.pipe://localhost/rss/AtrsHostRemotingRequestService that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details.

What is basically required to have SMP 7.5.x CEM functionality working via HTTPs using self-signed or non self-signed certificates

Probably this information will be useful to know, if you're going to setup CEM in your environment.

All description steps in attached doc were done in SMP 7.5 SP1 release build!

In attached "CEM - Basic to install CEM functionality.docx" you will see following areas with screenshots and description, like:

  • How to install SMP 7.5 SP1 via SIM 7.5.x on "Default Web Site", using own non self-signed certificate and enabled HTTPs
  • Installation of Symantec Management Agent on endpoints from SMP Console to enable HTTPs communication via self/non-self-signed certificates
  • Pre-requisites for remote Site Server(s) installation and their installation to works through HTTPs via self/non-self-signed certificates
  • "Symantec Agent" web site (CEM Web Site) installation and other details about another certificate importing.
  • "SMP Internet Gateway" installation and configuration details
  • Details about adding "SMP" and "Site Servers" in installed/configured "CEM Gateway" and further Site assignments to server CEM clients.
  • Details about enabling "Cloud-enabled Management Settings" policy on SMP Console.
  • Details about "Cloud-enabled Management Settings" policy on managed endpoint and their behavior.

Migrating and Upgrading to IT Management Suite 7.6

Migration: A migration is when you install the latest version of the IT Management Suite solutions on a new server, and then migrate the data from the earlier ITMS solutions to the latest version of the application.

Upgrade: An upgrade is when you install the latest version of ITMS on the same hardware, server operating system, and database.

You must migrate the Notification Server 6.x or 7.0 data to either Notification Server 7.1 SP2 or Notification Server 7.5.

After migrating the data, you must first upgrade to either ITMS 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 or ITMS 7.5 SP1 HF5 depending on the path you choose and then upgrade to ITMS 7.6.

The following diagram gives an overview of the migration and upgrade process:
